Nearshoring Is Booming in Mexico. Here Are Five Numbers to Prove It


There certainly has been lots of interest and talk about nearshoring. This short article, from one of my favorite supply chain management journals, puts some facts and figures on the topic. This growth itself will likely bring new challenges to Mexico. At some point one would have to think the cost of real estate and access to talent may become problems that are seen in other geographies. The question is "when"?

I recently read this blog for Supply Chain Brain. Usually, I like what they have to say. This time, I agree with some of the points made such as the trend to economic nationalism impacting the supply chain, but i think this trend started before the political impact. Supply chains were being contracted, and relocated, to produce either where the raw materials were located or where the customers were located. For some fortunate few, those two locations were in the same geography. This is the "dig dirt where you sell dirt" concept. I don't agree with the comments made about the SCOR (Supply Chain Operations Reference) model. To me, it offers a documented structure of the overall process (plan-source-make-deliver-return-enable) along with some terrific guidance on metric selection, definitions and best practices. PRACTICALLY SPEAKING -How and Where to focus improvement initiatives in the Machine Shop

During a career spanning nearly 40 years, I have worked in--and visited--many machine shops. These ranged from small subcontractors to valve OEM s (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and commercial aircraft manufacturers. Everyone is looking to improve their operations. Those who aren’t are either going out of business or already out of business. The real question is how and where does one start? Follow a simple 3-step process. Step 1: Focus. Trying to fix everything all at once will ensure that there will lots of effort expended with little return in either the short- or medium-term. Start by focusing on known bottlenecks. These are usually best identified via regular walks through the value stream (known as a GEMBA walk) and by simply asking employees about trouble spots.
